How much does a private jet cost per year

Fixed costs, variable costs and the depreciation nobody invoices for, with the number of hours at which owning stops costing more than chartering.

Three kinds of cost, routinely confused

Fixed costs accrue whether the aircraft flies or not. Crew salaries, hangarage, insurance, recurrent training, management, subscriptions. On a midsize jet they reach several hundred thousand dollars before an engine is started.

Variable costs accrue per hour flown. Fuel is the visible one. The reserves for the engines and the airframe are heavier over time and they are the ones owners forget, because nobody invoices for them monthly. The first heavy check arrives with six figures attached.

Capital cost means the finance payment plus depreciation. Depreciation is a real cost even though no money moves, and on a new aircraft it is the largest line in the budget.

Orders of magnitude

A light jet flown 250 hours a year, bought for around nine million dollars with twenty per cent down, comes to roughly two million dollars a year once everything is counted. A large cabin aircraft at four hundred hours runs closer to nine million.

Those figures move twenty per cent either way depending on the country, the crewing arrangement and how hard the aircraft is worked. Anyone who quotes a precise annual figure for a type, rather than for an aircraft and an operation, is guessing.

The calculator below runs the same model and shows every line. Change the hours and watch which costs move and which do not.

The number nobody volunteers

Divide the all-in annual cost by the hours flown and compare it against what the same aircraft costs to charter. For most private owners, at the two to four hundred hours a year they really fly, chartering works out cheaper.

That is worth stating plainly because almost nobody in this industry states it. Ownership wins on availability, on control, on privacy, on having a cabin fitted your way and a crew who know you. Those advantages are real and they are worth paying for. They are not financial arguments, and a purchase justified on financial grounds that do not hold up is a purchase people come to regret.

Ownership does win financially at high utilisation, or where a charter certificate lets the aircraft earn while you are not using it. That is a separate decision with its own costs.

What are the fixed costs of owning an aircraft?
Crew salaries, hangarage, insurance, recurrent training, management and subscriptions. They accrue whether the aircraft flies or not, and on a midsize jet they reach several hundred thousand dollars before an engine is started.
Is it cheaper to charter than to own?

计算假设

  • Representative Western-Europe and North-America costs at 2026 prices. A specific operation can differ by twenty per cent either way.
  • Engine and airframe reserves are accrued per hour whether or not an invoice arrives that year. Owners who leave them out are the ones surprised by the first heavy check.
  • Depreciation is a real cost even though no money moves. It is the largest single line on a new aircraft.
  • The loan amortises over 20 years but matures at 10, leaving a balloon to refinance or repay.
